How do you start strength training?

Short answer
Train your whole body two to three times a week, with 2–3 sets per exercise. Start by ending sets with 2–3 reps in reserve and progress in small steps. Almost any regular strength training works.
Figures
- ≥ 2× · sessions per week for strength (ACSM)
- 2–3 · sets per exercise for strength (ACSM)
- ≥ 10 · sets per muscle per week for growth (ACSM)
What the guideline says
The ACSM position stand draws on 137 systematic reviews: resistance training improves strength and muscle size compared with no training. For strength it highlights loads from 80% of 1RM, 2–3 sets and at least two sessions a week; for muscle growth, at least 10 sets a week.
How little is already enough
In Schoenfeld and colleagues, trained men gained strength with three 13-minute sessions a week. This was not a tested beginner programme. Start with a manageable workload and add more once you know the movements.
Start safely
Learn technique with light loads and stop if something hurts. With existing health conditions, check with a doctor before you start. The 2–3 reps in reserve at the start are a practical rule, not a study result.
