Do you need a deload week?

Short answer

Not by the calendar. In a randomised trial with trained people, a week completely off did not slow muscle growth, but strength rose slightly less. Plan a lighter week when performance and motivation drop over several weeks.

Figures

One week off: similar muscle gain, less strength gain

What the study shows

Coleman and colleagues had 39 trained women and men train for 9 weeks; one group took week 5 off completely. Muscle size, muscular endurance and power showed no meaningful difference. The group without a break gained slightly more leg strength and felt slightly more ready to train.

When a lighter week fits

As a practical rule: when performance drops for two or three weeks, joints complain, or holidays and stress are coming anyway. Then halve your sets and stay a bit further from failure rather than stopping. This is experience, not a study result.

Limits

It is one short study, and it tested a complete break rather than reduced training. Measurements focused on the legs.
